A team of five students in the Wake Technical Community Colleges Culinary curriculum have earned ACF gold medals at the annual American Culinary Federation Junior Hot Food Competition.
The event took place January 16, 2010, at Johnson and Wales University in Charlotte.
Culinary students Shiella Arcangel, Tim Bartlebaugh, Lisa Bence, Robyn Guisto and Eddie Sautro practiced for six months to get ready for the competition. Matthew McGovern Helped with practices and logistics.
The competition is made up of two parts, a skills part in which the students have to complete various culinary skills relay style in a given amount of time, and a menu part. During the menu part the team has to prepare a four course meal for four guests within 90 minutes.
They are judged on culinary skills, sanitation, teamwork, flavor and presentation of the food among other things.
Wake Technical Community College usually fields a team for the ACF Junior Hot Food Competition held annually at different locations. Students are encouraged, and have in past years, participated in various other competitions, some ACF sanctioned some are not ACF sanctioned. Wake Tech also tries to host a team for student pastry competitions — look for announcements on the bulletin board and the ACF web site for competition opportunities, or ask your chef instructor.
